This year your child will become fully immersed into what we like to call “author’s craft”. Not only will your child work on brainstorming, writing, grammar, subject/verb agreement etc. He/she will learn to look at another author’s work and incorporate similar elements in their writing. For example: larger print for some words, bolding, highlighting, multiple
punctuation marks, the way the words are arranged on the page etc. To watch this transformation as they become authors with their own voices is something quite extraordinary.
Studies show that an author writes more and with a better quality if it is something he/she is interested in. Therefore, we will very rarely assign a topic for your child to write about. We do study different forms of writing. This year your child will write: personal narratives, expository pieces, letters, simple explanations, and non-fiction. We will assign the format however, the topic will be completely student selected. This will allow your child to blossom as an author.
With that being said there are certain things your child should be able to do when writing. In order to assess their writing we will be using the NNPS writing rubric for second grade as well as various checklists. We have attached all of these for you to view and reinforce at home.
We recommend your child keeping a daily or weekly journal in order to practice these skills at home as well.
